Walker Surfboards

As sunny Australia heats up over summer and we all head to the beach, I thought it appropriate to share these great hand made surfboards by Peter Walker of Adelaide, South Australia.

The following photos are from the Walker Surfboards website and facebook page unless noted otherwise.

Peter Walker was born and raised in Sydney, initially studying in Tasmania he carved and constructed his way through furniture design and sculpture, now specialising in these highly sculptural boards which perhaps embody many of his life passions…

Each board is made using a range of artisan techniques, sometimes working with local artists for the final graphics – a  great example of collaboration and engaging local skills!

An incredibly labour intensive process, each board is unique. Peter’s background in design and furniture making results in a product that blurs the line between art and functionality.

The following photos we took at ‘Making Waves’ exhibition in 2010 at the Jam Factory in Adelaide which we were lucky enough to visit. It was a a beautifully presented exhibition of the surfboards, although we’d prefer to see them darting amongst the waves – all the surfboards are designed to be surfed!

After dividing his time as Associate Professor of Furniture Design at the Rhode Island School of Design USA and his surf board work studio in Adelaide, Australia,  Peter is currently Program Director of Sustainable Design at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia.
